Chief Pontiac
Pontiac (born c. 1720, on the Maumee River [now in Ohio, U.S.]—died April 20, 1769, near the Mississippi River [at present-day Cahokia, Ill.]) was an Ottawa Indian chief
who became a great intertribal leader when he organized a combined resistance—known as Pontiac’s War (1763–64)—to British power in the Great Lakes area.
Little is known of Pontiac’s early life, but by 1755 he had become a tribal chief. His commanding manner and talent for strategic planning enabled him to also become the leader of a loose confederacy among the Ottawa, the Potawatomi, and the Ojibwa. In 1760 he met Maj. Robert Rogers, a British colonial ranger on his way to occupy Michilimackinac (St. Ignace, Mich.) and other forts surrendered by the French during the French and Indian War of 1754–63. Pontiac agreed to let the British troops pass unmolested on condition that he be treated with respect

Because [I have done this and because] I love you, you must do what I say and [not do] what I hate. I do not like that you drink until you lose your reason, as you do; or that you fight with each other; or that you take two wives, or run after the wives of others; you do not well; I hate that. You must have but one wife, and keep her until death.

About the Pontiac Heritage Historic Society
The Pontiac Heritage Historic Society was created to protect, preserve, and honor the true history of Pontiac. As generations pass, we are losing more than people… we are losing our stories, our legacy, and the proof that we were here. So we stepped in.
We identified Pontiac’s legacy families. We began working with community leaders, historians, and partner organizations to locate and collect the history, memorabilia, and stories that define our community. Now, we are focused on securing a permanent home to preserve it all… because Pontiac’s history deserves to be seen, respected, and protected for generations to come.
This is about us. For us. By us.
